After a year-long wait, residents of Barangay Capitan Bayong, who have not had a chance to finish grade school or high school, will finally get a chance to study and finish elementary or high school levels. The Alternative Learning System (ALS) was launched at a ceremony held at the Capitan Bayong Covered Court.

Barangay Kagawad Rory Roque, who heads the Education and Functional Literacy Committee of the barangay has long since envisioned a program that would give residents an opportunity to enrich their lives by finishing elementary and high school. One of his projects, the Capitan Bayong Reading Center, has already come to fruition and thus, he set his sights on providing a tangible way for residents to learn to read, write or finish school.

A year ago, he chanced upon Pastor Daniel Asuncion, who heads the Natid-asan ALS Center in Malaybalay and is the ALS Service Provider in Bukidnon, and spoke about his desire to start this program in Capitan Bayong.

That dream was finally realized in a launching program where Nydia L. Faro – Education Program Supervisor, Cerenita C. Genoso – District ALS Coordinator, Pastor Daniel Asuncion – ALS Service Provider, Pastor Fransisco A. Flores – ALS Instructional Manager, and Chito G. Guinawat – ALS Mobile Teacher explained the basics of ALS to some 50 people. In fact, an additional 20 people have signified their desire to finish school through the Alternative Learning System.

The residents were encouraged to note that Manny Pacquiao, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson among others took part and graduated as a result of the ALS program. Here’s looking to a bright future for Barangay Capitan Bayong!
